30: Name Our Beer!

Tampa, FL (July 2008)- Have you ever dreamed of looking upon the shelves at your favorite beer store and seeing a beer you named? Wake up and dream no more! We need a name for Cigar City Brewing’s Double Nut Brown Ale and you just might be the person to name it. This is your chance to put your stamp on a craft brewery!

First a little history.

We were just going to call the beer…Double Nut Brown Ale. While straightforward and undemanding, Double Nut Brown Ale just does not properly express the elegance and pure scrumptiousness of this brew. Nevertheless, we thought that with the right image we could make the name work.

We experimented with several ideas including some rather gauche images of a squirrel holding two conspicuously placed nuts. Again, this tact just did not do the beer justice. This brew is a sophisticated sipper more suited to fireplace chats than vulgar cartoon humor. We pressed on. Unfortunately, it appears that we at Cigar City Brewing are far more at home with the ribald than with the respectable. Because we couldn’t come up with squat.

So we decided to take it to the beer lovers and see if the beer lovers could deliver a name that did justice to this beer and displayed some of the decorum we clearly lack. To give you a better picture of the beer you will be naming we’ll describe the beer itself along with foods it pairs well with.

The Beer.

Cigar City Brewing’s Head Brewer Wayne Wambles describes it thusly:

It is a Double Northern English-style Brown Ale. It is 9.5% abv and made with primarily English malts, except for the wheat and two different toasted malts. It is hopped with English hop varietals and is dark brown in color with a light tan head. The aroma is redolent with caramel and toffee sweetness and hints of toasted bread and chocolate. The flavor begins with semisweet dark chocolate and then waves of caramel and toffee sweetness start to cradle your palate. The finish ends with roasted peanuts. I simply describe the flavor as rum infused, dark chocolate-coated roasted peanuts. The body is medium full and the alcohol presence is very deceptive.”

When to drink it, what to drink it with.

Wayne says, “I think that this beer would be a great Fall beer, but I think that some people might say it would be a great anytime beer. It pairs great with cigars, mole, smoky sweet barbecue, molasses covered buckwheat pancakes with unsalted smoked almonds on top, tootsie rolls, blackened dishes and basically anything that has char notes or dark sugar notes it should work beautifully with."

What we’ll give you if we like your name.

Kudos, appreciation, respect, warm handshakes and grateful smiles. If that isn’t enough we’ll also throw in a case of the beer you named once we brew it, assorted Cigar City Brewing apparel and give you credit for the name on the bottle label. So stretch out your creativity muscles and start coming up with names. Once you have thought of a killer name or two send them to us. That's all there is to it.

Send entries to beername@cigarcitybrewing.com or visit blog.cigarcitybeer.com for more info.

Enter as many names as you like and be sure to include contact information so we can inform you if your entry is selected or so that we may alert the authorities as to your whereabouts should that become necessary. We’d say keep it clean, but as has already been established we can’t do that ourselves. Bear in mind though that the guv’ment isn’t going to approve anything blatantly naughty. Have fun.
