You guys obviously have a better idea of what the "Cigar City brand" is, but I'd like to see more consistency from label to label. If I saw all of these in the grocery store I wouldn't know that they were from the same brewery. It's the North Coast approach to labels, which I think hurts their brand overall. Dogfish Head and Rogue, on the other hand, have strong, unified brands that are instantly recognizable, even if all you see is the label. Reply to this

Good points Jonathan. We are trying to balance things. On one hand we have a very real desire to affect a different look that captures the vastly different experiences each beer, due to their differing styles, impart. On the other hand we are aware that some consumers could easily get confused by the wide array of images.
Another thing to consider is that we are only doing two year round beers. The Jai Alai IPA and Patio Pils. The rest are seasonals or limited releases. So there will seldom be more than the two year round beers and one seasonal in the market at one time. We dig artwork and we think each beer should be a different deal from the others. We think of it like this...CCB is the band and each beer is a new album. You still want to recognize the band, but you want a different feel for each album. We are willing to sacrifice a bit of "corporate consistency" to keep from the same old same old that drives us nuts.
Still, we acknowledge the need to make the brewery clearly understood. So we are taking the Bells Brewery approach to this by doing very different artwork but by including the CCB logo on everything, the way Bells does. We need to refine placement and size, but we'll get that plugged in too.
Hopefully we can come to a happy medium with the images that lets us make each beer a separate production while maintaining some company continuity.
Thanks for the feedback, Jonathan, we always learn from the other beer lovers out there! Reply to this

Excellent. I KNEW there was a reason for everything. I would only offer a couple more thoughts...
1) If part of the consistency is in the logo, I would try to make sure the logo is in a prominent place on each label.
2) This last comment is from working in marketing and advertising for 5 years now... Make sure you think of the "same old same old" from the consumer perspective and not your own. You will of course tire of your brand since you're living it day in and day out. But Joe Shmoe on the street probably won't tire of it, and might actually be confused if he sees too many different iterations of it. There's a fine line between consistent brand promise and freshness.
Bottom line, change isn't necessarily bad, but make sure you're not changing things for your own sake but for the consumer's sake. If consumers expect new and fresh, great. Reply to this

I agree with Jonathan that North Coast's labeling hurts their brand, but I like your explanation Joey.

Awesome stuff. I absolutely love barrel-aged beers so I can't wait to try these. Please tell me I'll be able to get them in NYC! Would love to try them and review them on my blog.

I LOVE the Imperial Stout label and dig the Big Sound label too. The Jai Alai label still needs a little polishing (in my humblest of opinions) maybe just focus on the hop flower and a jai-alai bat or something of the nature, I'm not sure. The Humidor series label is also quite busy, but I like the emphasis on Tampa culture and cigars. I also like the guava grove but something about the background peachy tan color that I'm not crazy about. Have you guys considered a neck label on the bottles as something to keep the individual beers consistantly identifiable? I agree with Jonathan that identifiability (is that a word?) is quite important as far as the marketing aspect of this adventure. Reply to this

Hello Aaron,
The Humidor series will be a rotating series that is aged on cedar. We will notify the public what each style is annually.
Take care,
Wayne
